Construction set-out surveys are required for the set out of buildings and civil works. Before the commencement of any building or civil work, a surveyor should set out the proposed works to ensure that such works are located in the correct position with respect to the boundaries and other proposed or existing structures.

Set-out marks and level datum points are usually placed at an offset from the proposed corners of the intended building or civil work. Upon completion of the building or civil work, identification/as-built/work-as-executed survey may be required to certify the location and levels of the building/civil work.
